Display fabric: choosing, fitting and refreshing a backing

Fabric backing can offer a different appearance and handling experience from paper. The right choice depends on the actual material, board and location. Trial a sample, check current supplier information and agree fitting and care arrangements before replacing several classroom backings.

Check the actual fabric

Compare the surface, opacity, texture and way a sample lies against the board. Products described as display fabric, including SmartFab options, may differ in care and performance; use the current information for the exact material. Do not infer washability, fire performance or suitability for a location from the category name. Ask the premises team about any requirements for the intended installation.

Build a sample book-review panel

Attach a small section using the board's approved fixing method, then add a pupil review, a title and an illustration. Check whether the fabric distracts from fine handwriting or shows through a pale card. Ask pupils to compare the same work on paper and fabric. Their observations can help identify whether the proposed change improves presentation or merely introduces a new texture.

Fit without unnecessary tension

Plan the placement and edges before securing the whole piece. Follow supplier and school instructions, and let an appropriate adult undertake installation. Avoid pulling a fabric so tightly that later fixings distort it. Keep labels on clear panels and use a stable arrangement that allows work to be replaced. Offer closer copies of key text when the board's position makes reading difficult.

Plan care and reuse

Retain the product label and care guidance with the stock record. Check for sagging, damage and marked areas during display changes, using only the cleaning method permitted for the material. Store unused fabric in the recommended way, protected from adhesive and paint supplies. Record how long the backing remains useful in that particular location, rather than assuming a general fabric claim predicts its performance in every room.

Action checklist

  • Trial the actual fabric on the intended board.
  • Check product-specific care and location requirements.
  • Use approved fitting methods without excessive tension.
  • Retain labels and review condition during display changes.

Common questions

Can display fabric be washed?

Check the exact product instructions. Materials sold for display can have different care requirements, and washing should not be assumed from the word fabric.
